Veteran second baseman adds valuable experience to infield corps

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball strengthened the depth of the infielders on its 2020 roster on Wednesday, and gained veteran experience for the group, as head coach Gerry Glasco announced the addition of Kaitlyn Alderink.

Alderink is a graduate transfer who competed at Texas A&M from 2016-18 before sitting out the 2019 season. A second baseman with 181 games of collegiate experience, she has one year of eligibility remaining and is set to join the team for preseason drills in January.

“Kaitlyn brings so much versatility to our team through her ability, love of the game and intangibles,” Glasco said. “She is a superbly intelligent player whose instincts on the field are a tremendous asset to a ball club.

“She is a team first player who will fit into our blue-collar atmosphere of extremely hard work and all-out effort on the field.”

A 2016 SEC All-Freshman choice and 2017 NFCA All-South Region performer, Alderink collected 330 putouts and 316 assists while sporting a .963 fielding percentage at second base for the Aggies. She totaled 90-plus assists all three seasons and fielded .969 or higher the last two seasons.

Alderink is a career .318 hitter who has scored 30-plus runs, produced 40-plus hits and generated 20-plus RBI each year of her collegiate career. She’s also totaled 38 extra base hits and 35 stolen bases.

As a freshman, she posted a .364 average with 41 RBI and scored 58 runs, the third-highest total in TAMU history.

She led the Aggies with 59 hits during her sophomore campaign, which ended in Oklahoma City, and as a junior started every game for the third straight season and recorded a career-best .970 fielding percentage (131 PO, 95 A, 7 E).

“She is a proven middle infielder who boasted a combined .340 average with 60 RBI in the two seasons I worked with her offensively as a freshman and sophomore,” Glasco said. “We’re adding SEC and Women’s College World Series experience to our infield and lineup.”

The Keller, Texas product prepped at Faith Christian High School in Grapevine, Texas, and Keller High School. She was ranked No. 20 in the Full Count Softball “Hot 100 2015 Softball Recruits”.

Alderink is the fifth transfer – and the fourth from a Power 5 program – to be added to Louisiana’s roster since the conclusion of the 2019 season. She joins Missouri tandem Callie Martin (Jr., OF, Raymore, Mo.) and Genana Torres (So., C/OF, Rochester, N.H.), Oregon’s Mia Camuso (Jr., IF, Redding, Calif.) and Miami Dade College transfer Melissa Mayeux (Jr., IF, Le Barcares, France).

Louisiana seeks to build upon one of the program’s most successful seasons ever. The 2019 squad swept the Sun Belt regular season and tournament championships, boasted a Top 10 national ranking, earned the program’s 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament bid and recorded the first 50-win campaign since 2012.

The 2020 schedule has been released and features a total of 14 non-conference games against programs that finished with a Top 25 RPI rating in 2019, plus a visit to Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park by Louisiana State.
