The University of Pittsburgh won both games in its fall ball season-opening doubleheader against Slippery Rock and West Liberty last Sunday afternoon at Vartabedian Field in the Petersen Sports Complex.
“I saw some really great performances on the mound from our entire staff,” head coach Jodi Hermanek said. “I thought each of them came out and did a good job just owning their pitches. One of our goals for them today was to win the spots and I thought they did a really good job of doing that, mixing speeds and coming out here, just really owning their craft.”
In game one Pitt got a 9-1 victory over Slippery Rock. Highlights of the game included Senior Kaitlyn Kruger’s 2nd inning homerun along with junior Hunter Levesque three-run homer.
In game two the score was a low one with Pitt getting the 2-1 victory over West Liberty. In the pitching duel Panther’s sophomore Abby Edwards and junior Brittany Knight kept the Hilltoppers scoreless through six innings before allowing West Liberty’s lone run in the 7th inning of the game.
“We’re going to celebrate these two victories,” Pitt head coach Jodi Hermanek said. “It’s the first time for this squad to get together and play together and we definitely have some good stuff to take back to the drawing board and look at.”
Pitt will next host Saint Francis (PA) in a doubleheader on Saturday, Oct. 5 beginning at 2 p.m. at Vartabedian Field.
