Arizona verses Washington was the opening game from the 2019 WCWS. It was a pitching duel with Wildcat’s Taylor McQuillin going up against Huskie starter Taran Alvelo for 6 innings. In the sixth inning though Arizona’s Jessie Harper done what she has been doing all season putting a run up on the scoreboard thanks to a home run. Washington quickly answered back though in the bottom when Huskie Sami Reynolds hit a home run to even the score. The game stayed that way going in to extra innings when in the top of the 8th inning Arizona’s other big bat Dejah Mulipola hit a two run home run giving Washington a 3-1 lead and the eventual win.

UCLA verses Minnesota in game two of opening day play at the 2019 WCWS. This was a match up of strong pitching with UCLA ace Rachel Garcia going up against Gopher pitcher Amber Fiser. Playing in the WCWS is nothing new to UCLA but it is Minnesota’s first time being there. That showed when the first pitch of the game by Fiser resulted in a home run by UCLA’s Bubba Nickles. Fisher got herself in several other tough situations including walking in a run with the bases loaded in the 2nd inning. By the 3rd inning UCLA had built a 3-0 lead. UCLA got the 7-2 win with a full game performance from Rachael Garcia. This one was never in doubt. Minnesota tried to mount a comeback getting 2 runs in the top of the 6th inning but UCLA came right back in the bottom of the inning adding 4 more runs to their total. The Bruins showed why they have been at or near the top all season long in the softball polls as one of the best teams in the country in this game.

Florida vs. Oklahoma State

In the first game of the two being played on Thursday night it was another pitcher’s duel with Florida’s Kelly Barnhill going up against Oklahoma State’s Samantha Show. It didn’t take long for Show to help her own cause being only the second batter Barnhill faced in the game Show belted one out of the park giving the Cowgirls a quick 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the second inning though Florida tied it up thanks to a solo home run by Jordan Roberts. Then things calmed down until the 6th inning when Sammantha Show again took things in her own hands in the batter box and hit a booming home run, her second of the night, to retake the lead 2-1. Florida made a try at a comeback in the 7th inning but Show shut it down for the complete game win while Barnhill took the complete game loss.

Oklahoma vs. Alabama

In the nightcap game of the opening day of the 2019 WCWS Alabama went up against Oklahoma. When the dust had settled Alabama had put up a good fight but lost to Oklahoma, 3-2. The Sooners took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning Alabama came back in the top of the third and tied the game thanks to a home run from Claire Jenkins. Oklahoma got another run though in the bottom of the third to get the 2-1 lead. Alabama came back in the fifth to score a run and make it a 2-2 game. Oklahoma got the game winning run in the 6th inning to take the win. Giselle ‘G’ Juarez got the win while Montana Fouts took the tough loss for Alabama. The game had an attendance of 9,290.
