I was looking forward to watching the St. Francis (Pa.) verses Michigan game late Friday afternoon. Living not far from the Red Flash campus I know about the gritty nature of the team and figured they’d give Michigan a tough game. St. Francis just didn’t look on their game though as they ended up getting blown out by Michigan 8-0 in a 6-inning run rule game.
Another surprise game was the terrible fielding performance of Arkansas as they became the first team to exit the 2019 tournament with losses in their Stillwater Regional first on Thursday evening 5-0 to Tulsa and then on Friday afternoon to BYU by a score of 6-3. Going in to the tourney I thought Razorback head coach Courtney Deifel had the team in playing good and in position to make a good showing but things fell apart instead for them.
Texas got off to a rough start also as they faced Sam Houston State in game one playing host in the Austin Regional. Not being able to get their offense going against SHSU pitcher Lindsey McLeod and managing to produce just one run in the game. Texas did take an early lead in the fourth inning with a homerun from Mary Iakopo. But in the sixth Sam Houston State took the lead with two run homerun from Tiffany Thompson giving SHSU the 2-1 win.
Another Texas team, the Aggies of Texas A&M, got off to a bad start on Friday losing their opening tourney game by a score of 3-1 to Houston in the Austin Regional. For A&M it was a matter of stranded baserunners with a total of 10 of them in the game.
